Looking after yourself

This is something I feel incredibly passionate about. It is so easy to put ourselves to one side and put everyone else first, but it is absolutely vital to look after yourself to prevent burnout.

By putting yourself first, you can give everyone the best possible version of yourself. We need to validate how we are feeling. Parenthood can be tough.

This is key when becoming a new parent… and anytime in life to be fair. If we cant make ourselves a priority, then who will?

Adjusting to parenthood can be hard, so giving yourself time to adapt and being loving and compassionate with yourself is so incredibly important.

There is no going back to your ‘old life’, its about adapting and finding your way through your new normal. it takes time so be patient and empathetic with yourself.

Its an absolute priority you look after your mental health. I have put together a list of what can help to maximise your wellbeing.

Getting out into Nature

Get outside! This will benefit you and your little ones. It can be incredibly calming and grounding to get out into nature and breath in that fresh air!

Nutrition

We are what we eat. Food choices can have a big impact on our energy levels, mental fatigue, and emotional wellbeing.

It makes it incredibly tough when we are extremely sleep deprived. All we crave is sugar and high fat foods, so trying to be mindful of this and having easily accessible healthy food is a practical thing we can all do.

Exercise

I cannot stress enough how important it is to keep moving. Exercise does much more than just give you a boost in mood. It positively impacts on your mind and body in countless ways.

Find an exercise that you enjoy. This will not only offer you joy while you are exercising, but increases your sensitivity to find joy in all aspects of your life.

Emotional needs

Depending on your personality type will determine what will work best for you. You can try:

  • Affirmations – what do you wish someone would say to you?
  • Journaling – Can be cathartic to dump our thoughts on paper.
  • Meditate/practice breathwork to regulate your nervous system.
  • Human connection – Find a good support network of likeminded people.

Try to create some healthy positive habits. Hopefully this post can help to find what will work best for you to make some positive changes.
